The subtle shift that brought me back to myself.
One evening, I was at a gathering with my husband’s friends—people I’ve met before, nothing particularly intense or uncomfortable. And yet… I caught myself doing that thing again.
Laughing at the “right” time.
Nodding. Smiling. Echoing back what someone just said.
I was like one of those bobbleheads on a dashboard—present, but not really there.
I wasn’t being human. I was being… agreeable.
I was performing.
Robotically, automatically—just trying to belong.
And somewhere in the middle of that small talk, it hit me:
Where did I go? Who am I being right now?
The truth is, I don’t like small talk. I never have.
I crave depth. Real conversation. Energy that feels like something.
But there I was, shape-shifting to make things smooth for everyone else—at the cost of my own truth.
That night didn’t wreck me. But it did wake me up.
Where do we go when we leave ourselves?
You might know this feeling too.
- You walk into a room and instantly adjust your energy.
- You smile even when you’re tired or uncomfortable.
- You say “yes” when your body is screaming “no.”
- You offer the version of you that feels safest—not truest.
It’s subtle.
But it’s costly.
We think we’re just being “easy” or “gracious” or “social.”
But what we’re often doing is abandoning ourselves to stay in someone else’s comfort zone.
And let me tell you—after decades of doing this—I know how quiet the disconnection can be.
How invisible it looks on the outside.
How draining it feels on the inside.
So what’s the shift?
It’s this:
Stop performing. Start responding.
The moment I began asking myself, “What’s real for me right now?” everything softened.
I didn’t have to blow up my life.
I didn’t have to declare I was done people-pleasing forever.
I just started noticing when I disappeared—and gently coming back.
That’s what this work is.
Not radical reinvention. Not personality overhauls.
Just… return.
Here’s what it looked like for me:
- Leaving a gathering early instead of pushing through.
- Not pretending to be interested in conversations that drain me.
- Letting silence be okay.
- Giving myself permission to be quiet, messy, awkward, or not “on.”
These are tiny things. But they are sacred.
Because they send the message:
“I trust myself more than I need your approval.”
And honestly? That’s the medicine.
Try this subtle shift:
This week, when you find yourself slipping into autopilot—
Take a breath.
Pause.
And ask:
“Am I performing… or am I present?”
“What’s real for me right now—and how can I honor that?”
You don’t have to answer perfectly.
Just notice.
That noticing is the shift.

Hi, I’m Veronica Drake—but you can call me Vee.
I’m an Intuitive Mentor and founder of The School of Spiritual Arts, where I guide women (mostly over 50) to break free from the stories they’ve been handed and reconnect with who they truly are.
My work is spiritual, practical, and a little bit sassy. I’m not here to fix you—because you’re not broken. I’m here to help you remember your wisdom, trust your intuition, and live from your sacred truth.
When one woman owns her truth, it creates a ripple—and that’s how we begin to shift the world.
Fun facts? I’m obsessed with coffee, true crime, and I once worked on a real-life murder case. (Yep. Ask me about it sometime.)
